What is Root Scaling and Planing?

Posted .

A common problem we see all too often at London Bridge Smiles is that of gum disease. Gum disease is the inflammation of the gum tissue, which could cause harm to your teeth and even the bones that support them. One of the biggest causes of gum diseases is the buildup of plaque on your teeth. Even though plaque is forming on your teeth all the time, it will inflame your gums if your teeth are not professionally cleaned on a regular basis. Visiting our dentists at London Bridge Smiles in Virginia Beach, Virginia for regular checkups and cleaning is the best way to prevent gum disease. During your visit to our office we’ll remove the plaque and tartar that have built up on your teeth.

If you are suffering from gum disease, there are two non-surgical ways to treat it.
Dental scaling involves the use of hand instruments and often ultrasonic instruments. The ultrasonic instrument removes plaque, tartar and biofilm through sonic vibrations. An instrument might be used to remove any substances that are left. In root planing, the dentist will scale the surface of the root of the tooth to remove any plaque and biofilm. A more advanced stage of gum disease may require surgical treatment.

It’s important to follow the dentist’s instructions after the procedure, and to take any medication prescribed for you. Our dentists will schedule a follow up visit to check your progress and it’s important that you continue to see the doctor for exams and cleanings. Proper brushing and flossing are excellent ways to combat gum disease.

If your gums feel tender or inflamed, or appear to be receding; or if you are experiencing loose teeth, schedule a visit with us today by calling 757-340-8805.
